4th Grade has been working on the Dewey Decimal System. We read the book, The Great Dewey Hunt then watch the Dewey Decimal Rap and played some online games with Dewey.
2nd grade is learning about Point of View. We read The Three Ninja Pigs. Then they constucted the pigs homes out of different materials. 3rd Grade is continuing our work with folktales. This week we focused on myths and read Little Bear, You're a Star! This book explained why we have the Big Dipper, Little Dipper, and the North Star. 1st Grade is continuing their work with author's purpose. This week we read two books about sea otters- National Geographic KIds Sea Otters and The Otter Who Loved to Hold Hands. Kindergarten finished another Building Block Nominee. We read Wolfie and then colored, cut and glued pictures from the story in the correct sequence.

Second, Third and Fourth Grade
These students completed a Scavenger Hunt for our Judy Young visit next week. First Grade We read A Pet for Miss Wright then did a Mix Pair Share to discuss our choice of pet for Miss Wright! They also completed a coloring sheet for the book. Kindergarten We read the book, Digger and Daisy Go on a Picnic. Then they completed a coloring sheet for the book. Everyone is very excited for our author visit next week. If you missed the order form for autographed books, there will be a note going home next week for you to order online. It is free shipping and they will be sent to the school. We learned about the Olympic sport of Bobsledding this week. We watched a short video of the U.S. Olympic Bobsledding Team. Students learned what kinds of things it takes to do this sport. Kindergarten and First Grade also read the book, Tacky and the Winter Games.
Next week we will start our author study of Judy Young. She is coming to our school on March 7! 4th Grade
We read the book, But I Read It On the Internet. We discussed how to find reliable Internet sources. We discussed questions we should ask about the site to determine if it was an accurate site to use for research. 3rd Grade We read the book, The Technology Tail. We discussed what kinds of things should be posted online. We used THINK-T-is it True?, H-is it Helpful?, I-is it Inspiring?, H-is it Helpful?, K-is it Kind?. If we can answer yes to all of those questions, then it is a good post. If not, then we should delete! 2nd Grade We read the Show-Me Nominee, Trombone Shorty. This is an autobiography about the life of Troy Andrews. We watched a short video of him playing his trombone. We then made our own instruments-maracas! 1st Grade We read the book, Finding Winnie. Then we talked about how this book related to our book last week, Fur, Fin and Feathers. The London Zoo is where Abraham Bartlett worked to create natural habitats for all of the animals. This was the reason that Harry, felt so comfortable leaving Winnie at the zoo while he was at war. Kindergarten We read, There's a Giraffe in My Soup. Then we looked at the live animals cams at the San Diego Zoo. Fourth Grade
We read It's Snowing by Gail Gibbons. Then the students use the Dash robots and coded them to move the "snow" to the collection area of the room. Third Grade We also read It's Snowing by Gail Gibbons. Then we drew and labeled a diagram of how snow forms. Second Grade We read out last Snow-Me Nominee this week, If you Ever Want to Bring an Alligator to School, DON'T. Then we used Pebble Go to find out facts about alligators. We did a Times Pair Share to share our learning. First Grade We read out last Show-Me Nominee, Fur, Fins and Feathers. Then we looked at the San Diego Zoo live web cams. They loved it! Kindergarten We read a Building Block Nominee this week, Lion Lessons. They they all worked on getting their Lion Diploma by acting like lions. This week we had a STEM Challenge with each grade level. We read the book, Pierre the Penguin, and then made a raft for Pierre to travel on and not get wet. We then added nickels to represent more penguins so see how many friends could also ride on the raft. A second grade group was the winner with 10! Here are some pictures.
4th Grade
We did a review of research books in the library with a Genre Game on the Smart Board then we played Quiz Quiz Trade . 3rd Grade We read The Christmas Tree Ship by Jeanette Winter. Then we did a Mix-Pair-Share to discuss the author's purpose for writing this book. 2nd Grade We read a Show-Me Nominee, Ketzel the Cat who Composed. Then we used the ipad app, Sketch a song to compose our own music. 1st Grade We read a Show-Me Nominee, Winnie, the true story of the bear who inspired Winnie-the-Pooh. Kindergarten We read two books, Reindeer and The Great Reindeer Rebellion and discussed the traits that made each book fiction or nonfiction. All grade levels worked on the Hour of Code this week.
4th Grade
Some of the classes participated in the Hour of Code, while others had play practice this week. 3rd Grade We read another one of the Great Kids Can Read books this week, Billy's Booger. They learned that they can make a funny, silly story about ordinary things. 2nd Grade We read another Show-Me Nominee, Queen of the Diamond. Then the students took a quiz about the book on Kahoot! 1st Grade We read another Show Me Nominee, Ketzel the Cat Who Composed. Then I introduced the ipad app, Sketch a Song and the students composed their own music! Kindergarten We listened to a song about the differences between fiction and nonfiction. Then I read two books on the same topic and the students decided which was which. Then we played a game with flip cards. 3rd and 4th Grade
We watched two videos on using apps with Dash and Dot. After checkout then students got to explore with the Wonder and Blockly apps. 2nd Grade We read the book, Twinderella, that the author had sent us for our opinions. We then wrote book reviews that will be sent to her next week. The majority of the students gave it 5 stars! 1st Grade We talked about the differences between Fiction and Nonfiction. We sang a song and held up cards that read fiction or nonfiction for different books in the song. We read Bears Snores On and A Bear Cub Grows Up on Bookflix. We then played Find My Perfect Pair! Each student was given a book and they looked through it and determined if it was Fiction or Nonfiction. I then told them to find their Perfect Pair. They found another student with a book on the same topic as theirs. They sat down and told each other why their book was either Fiction or Nonfiction. It was a lot of fun! Kindergarten We read Arthur's Computer Disaster. Then learned how to use the Symbaloo on the chrome books. We discussed what to do if something goes wrong with the computer or website. |
